City of Bruneck

The City of Bruneck is one of 116 municipalities of the Autonomous Province South Tyrol in Italy. Bruneck consists of the villages Bruneck, St. Georgen, Reischach, Stegen, Dietenheim and Aufhofen, has 15.190 inhabitants and the area extents over 45,07 km².

The City of Bruneck is the centre of the valley of Pustertal, his side valleys and here mainly for the valley of Ahrntal. Despite the existing of a bypass road, Bruneck is a “magnet” for 4.000 jobs, a school-centre and the centre of public transport (train, bus, citybus).

Bruneck attracts also thousands of tourists, mainly trough the ski area Kronplatz. All these facts confirm the very high volume of traffic and the problem with the PM10.

With the programm “Aktiv für gute Luft”, at which 16 municipalities participate in South Tyrol, various actions against the fine dust have been done:

- driving bans for vehicles with a Euro-0 or Euro-1 classification
- public relation and discounts on public transport, and introduction of alternatives (Citybus)
- tax exemption for gas-powered vehicles and vehicles retrofitted with particulate filters

The City of Bruneck participate also every year at the “European mobility-week” from 16th until 22nd of September. Various activities will lead to a more environmentally conscious and aware of sustainable mobility behavior.

For the administration, implementation and monitoring of these actions, the town police, with his chief commander DDr. Alexander Steiner, is responsible in the City of Bruneck.
